Sergeant James Kirkland of Glasgow, Scotland was the great-grandfather of our Founder, Dr. Stephanie Gysel. He graduated from the Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain in Edinburgh on January 2nd, 1908, as a Chemist and Druggist. Sergeant Kirkland immigrated to Canada in April 1912, and resided in Winnipeg, Manitoba. He enlisted in the Canadian Expeditionary Force during the first World War and belonged to the 79th Cameron Highlanders of Canada. After the war ended, Sergeant Kirkland worked as a Pharmacist in Winnipeg.
An ‘Apothecary’, ‘Druggist’, or ‘Chemist’ are all old English terms for the modern-day profession of a pharmacist. Apothecare was named in the honor of Sergeant Kirkland for his bravery in WW1 and his work as a pharmacist in Canada.
