Why the Name Apothecare? Apothecary + Care

The name Apothecare was chosen to reflect both the history of pharmacy and the kind of care we believe patients deserve today.

"Apothecary" is an old term for a pharmacist or person who prepared and dispensed medicines.

For us, the word also has a personal connection. Our founder's great-grandfather, Sergeant James Kirkland, trained as an apothecary and druggist in Scotland in 1908. He later served during the First World War before continuing his career in pharmacy in Winnipeg. His story represents an earlier era of pharmacy, when the pharmacist was often a trusted and familiar part of the community.

That history is part of the reason the word Apothecare became the starting point for our name. Apothecare was never intended to be about looking backward. It was created to carry the best part of that tradition forward.

The History Explains "Apothecary". Our Patients Explain "Care".

The second half of our name is just as important. Care represents what we believe pharmacy should be.

It means taking the time to understand the person behind the prescription. It means asking questions, identifying problems, following up, and using our knowledge as pharmacists to help patients make informed decisions about their health.

At Apothecare, we believe patients should feel that their pharmacist knows them, understands their health goals, and is genuinely invested in their care.

Why Apothecare Was Created

Care Beyond Prescriptions

Modern pharmacists have extensive training in medications, chronic disease management, prevention, and patient education. We wanted to create a pharmacy where that expertise could be used fully, and where patients had the time and space to benefit from it.

That is why Apothecare was designed around pharmacist-led care.

Our pharmacists work with patients to manage medications, monitor chronic conditions, assess cardiovascular and metabolic risk, support prevention and screening, and collaborate with other healthcare professionals when needed.

We also wanted the experience of coming to a pharmacy to feel different.

Less rushed.

More personal.

More thoughtful.

More connected.

Apothecare Today

Apothecary + Care = Apothecare.

More than a century separates James Kirkland's pharmacy training in Scotland from the care we provide today, but the underlying idea remains surprisingly similar.

Pharmacists have long been amongst the most accessible healthcare professionals in their communities. What has changed is how much we are able to do.

Today, pharmacists can play an important role in prevention, medication optimization, chronic disease management, prescribing, monitoring, education, and collaboration with the rest of a patient's healthcare team.

Apothecare brings those possibilities together with the personal relationship that has always been at the heart of community pharmacy.

Pharmacists who care.
